Arsène Wenger has backed Olivier Giroud to beat his tally of 17 goals in his debut campaign at Arsenal next season.

The French striker netted 17 times in all competitions for Wenger’s men after completing a transfer from Montpellier last summer, helping the Gunners secure a fourth-place finish in the Premier League.

And the Arsenal boss is convinced that the 26-year-old will be “even stronger” next season as the north London club look to launch a challenge for the league title.

“I like Olivier very much,” said Wenger of Giroud, who scored a brace inside two minutes as Arsenal thrashed an Indonesian XI 7-0 in their first pre-season friendly on Sunday.

“He had his first year, he scored 17 goals in all competitions and he needed to adapt. I am sure he will be even stronger next season.”
Wenger also moved to play down fears over Jack Wilshere’s fitness after the midfielder sat out Sunday’s match.

Wenger said of Wilshere: “He had ‘flu. He’s alright now, he will play in the next game. It was not an ankle problem.”
Arsenal play Vietnam in their second pre-season friendly on Wednesday.
