Nigeria to Commence 24 Hours Trading Settlement Cycle

For the first time in the history of any capital market in Africa, Nigeria is set to commence 24 hours trading settlement circle, even as investors in the Nigerian Capital market are now to get dividend payment within 24 hours through the e-Dividend Payment Platform. Director General of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Mounir Gwarzo made this disclosure at the e-Dividend Sensitisation Town Hall Meeting in Lagos.

According to him, the proposed system will automatically allow dividends to be credited directly into shareholders’ accounts within 24 hours of payment by the company. Gwarzo stated that this was one of the initiatives being implemented by the commission as part of its 10 year Capital Market Master Plan to encourage retail investors to return to the market and thereby deepen the market. What to do in a Buyer’s Market

The real estate market, like most investment vehicles, always goes in cycles. There are times when the value of properties seems to keep going up and up. There are also times when it seems the value of properties is going down and down.

Abiodun  Doherty
Each of these cycles is affected by economic, social and political factors. The real estate market is an integral part of the society and always reflects the current or immediate trends in the society. The fact remains that no matter the cycle, it is either the buyers or the sellers that would benefit the most. Understanding what to do in each cycle is something every investor should be knowledgeable about.

Markets Overreacting, says Nasdaq Boss

Sharp falls on Wednesday saw billions wiped off stock markets, with some indexes 20% down from their 2015 peak.

"Once the emotion has left the market, you're left with businesses doing reasonably well," said Mr Greifeld.
"How did the low oil price turn into bad news?" he added.
"Better to have it at $26 per barrel than $126. And China's 6.9% growth may be disappointing, but it's still growing."

Concern over the falling oil price and China's slowdown are seen as the main factors behind the market falls.

JSE recovers as market shrugs off rating downgrades

The JSE started the week on a positive note, gaining 0.86% as the market followed firmer Asian markets and a strong showing by the Dow Jones industrial average on Friday.
The market shrugged off Friday’s rating downgrades by Fitch and Standard & Poor’s (S&P) with an expected US rate hike next week largely priced in following better than expected November US jobs data released on Friday.

Fitch downgraded South Africa from BBB to BBB-, one notch above subinvestment grade. S&P already has SA on BBB-, but shifted its outlook on South Africa from stable to negative.

Fitch Ratings Market Braces for Rating Backlash

Local markets look set to weaken on Monday — reflecting capital outflows as investors digest Friday’s decision by one global ratings agency to downgrade South Africa and another agency’s decision to change its outlook to negative.
The ratings agency decisions are a clear wake-up call to the government to quickly implement reforms that will grow the economy faster and to adopt policies that will make businesses more confident, analysts say.

Warning over corporate bond market

"There's a worry that there's no buyers of bonds and that on any given day everyone might want to sell," he said.
The past few months have seen a number of market watchers express concern about the $10tn corporate bond market.
Corporate bonds allow companies to sell their debt to investors, and operate in a similar way to government bonds.

In a speech last week, Mr Gilbert warned of the systemic risk of a run on the corporate bond market and called on the Bank of England and other central banks to act as "buyers of last resort".

Emerging Assets Weaken after Yuan Devaluation

Emerging market currencies tumbled on Tuesday in the wake of China's record 1.9 percent currency devaluation, which took offshore-traded yuan 2.5 percent lower and rekindled fears for growth in the world's No. 2 economy.
China's central bank cut the yuan's daily fix, effectively devaluating it against the dollar after data released on the weekend showed an 8.3 percent slump in Chinese exports. Bigger moves down in the more freely traded offshore yuan pushed the spread between it and its onshore counterpart to its widest in more than 10 months.
