Nigeria’s Pension is booming from N2tr liability to N4.3tr asset

The National Pensions Commission (PenCom) has seen its books move from a N2 trillion deficit to N4.3 trillion asset in its 10 years of operations. The acting Director-General, Mrs Chinelo Anohu-Amazu, revealed this in her presentation to the National Conference Committee on Civil Society, Labour, Youths and Sports on Wednesday in Abuja.
She said that the growth and achievements recorded were made possible through the reforms that were carried out in pension administration necessitated by the gaps indentified in the scheme. “To the credit of the system which is transparent and resilient, it is designed to cater for workers at old age when they are no longer able to work.

“This is why the asset has grown from a N2 trillion deficit to a N4.3 trillion asset and with its daily esteem growing. “A lot of issues were thrown up with the creation of a totally new financial sector which was the Pension Fund Administration (PFA) and Pension Fund Custodian (PFC),” she said.

Anohu-Amazu said that the commission was doing everything possible to ensure effective management of pensioners’ funds in its custody. Anohu-Amazu said any story that had to do with pension fund being embezzled had nothing to do with the contributory pension system because the system in place had made this impossible as the structure prevented access to the funds.

Don’t include religion, ethnicity in Nigeria’s 2016 Census, IBB tells commission

“Those who are fanatical about religion or tribe will want the outcome to be in favour of their religion or tribe.”
A former military ruler, Ibrahim Babangida, on Tuesday urged the National Population Commission, NPC, to adequately publicise the aims and objectives of census before embarking on the 2016 head count. He ‎also advised the commission not to include religion and ethnicity in the census data.

Mr. Babangida made the call when some staff members of the NPC, led by Aliyu Datti, visited him in Minna.
“Wrong perception of what census is all about which characterised past head counts conducted in the country had rendered the exercise controversial.

“This development should be discouraged.
“We are all Nigerians. We should not go to war over census figures’’, he said.
Mr. Babangida said the inclusion of religion and tribe as part of the information required is one of the main causes of the controversies which usually come up at the end of every exercise.

“Those who are fanatical about religion or tribe will want the outcome to be in favour of their religion or tribe.
“We should try and remove all these things that tend to cause controversy’’, he added.

He said the 1991 census conducted by his administration failed to impress on the people that head count was not about religion or tribe but about numbers needed for planning at all levels of government.
He commended the ongoing sensitisation by the NPC, adding that it would go a long way in strengthening census in the country.

“If we are able to make the next exercise look normal and devoid of all these issues, it will help get rid of the attendant controversies after the exercise,” Mr. Babangida said.

He urged the commission to ensure adequate publicity and sensitisation of the next exercise.
Earlier, Mr. Datti told the former head of state that the commission was consulting with principal actors of previous census to ensure that the 2016 exercise was acceptable.

AstraZeneca rejects 'final' takeover bid from Pfizer

UK drugs company AstraZeneca has rejected an improved "final" takeover offer from US drugs giant Pfizer.
Pfizer had made a new offer of £55 per share, valuing AstraZeneca at about £69bn.infographic
But AstraZeneca says the new proposal "undervalues the company and its attractive prospects".
Pfizer's pursuit has been under scrutiny because of fears it would hamper AstraZeneca's drug research and cut jobs.

Pfizer planned to create the world's largest drug company, with its headquarters in New York, but based in the UK for tax purposes.
In a strategy known as "tax inversion" Pfizer could pay the UK corporate tax rate of 20%, rather than the 35% rate applied in the US, if it bought AstraZeneca.

That plan proved controversial with unions and politicians, as AstraZeneca employs 6,700 people in the UK.
AstraZeneca chairman Leif Johansson said Pfizer's pursuit had been "fundamentally driven" by the corporate financial benefits.
"Pfizer has failed to make a compelling strategic, business or value case," he added.

Pfizer's best-known drug is Viagra
Viagra packetOf the two companies' research and development workforce, Pfizer had said it would retain at least 20% in the UK for at least five years. It had also pledged to base its European HQ in Britain.
AstraZeneca's shares fell by more than 13% after its rejection of the offer.

The BBC's business editor Kamal Ahmed said the deal appeared to be over "unless AstraZeneca's shareholders take an astonishingly aggressive stance and force the board to the negotiating table".
In its new offer statement, Pfizer chief executive Ian Read said: "We stand by our unprecedented commitments to the UK government."
Pfizer had said that its improved offer of £55 per share was "final" and would not be increased.
AstraZeneca shareholders were being offered £24.76 in cash and 1.747 shares in the new firm - worth a combined £55 - for each share currently they hold.

Pfizer had also promised not to mount a hostile takeover - a direct approach to shareholders of AstraZeneca without the involvement of its board.

Mr Johansson said that he had made clear to Pfizer that his board could only recommend a bid that was at least 10% above an offer of £53.50 made by Pfizer on Friday.

He told Radio 4's Today programme that AstraZeneca had rejected Pfizer's offer for three reasons - that it could create better value for shareholders independently, that a takeover would limit its ability to get drugs to market quickly and that the deal carried a "big execution risk".

"It's obviously a controversial deal," he added.
Will Hedden, a trader at spread betting firm IG, said: "With Pfizer saying they won't go hostile, it looks like it is pretty much dead."
Shareholder anger
However, some shareholders said they were frustrated by AstraZeneca's decision to reject the offer.

A fund manager at a firm that is among the top ten investors in AstraZeneca told Reuters he was "extremely disappointed".
"We do not think the Astra management have done a good job on behalf of shareholders," he added.
A second shareholder, within the 40 largest investors in AstraZeneca, said: "I think large numbers of shareholders out there will be disappointed."

Edison Investment Research analyst Mick Cooper said AstraZeneca was banking on getting better returns for shareholders by remaining independent than the cash and share combination that Pfizer has offered.
"AstraZeneca will have six months to demonstrate that it was right to reject Pfizer's offer, or face the prospect of a fresh approach," he said.

The prestigious CAF Platinum Award went to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, and it was received on his behalf by the Nigerian Minster for Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, who proclaimed that Jonathan is the most successful president in the history of Nigeria. From comments monitored on Twitter by this writer, majority of the tweets lambasted the minister for his statement. According to one @egba, “Trust politicians to ruin a perfect evening. Why make such a statement.”

By far the most anticipated award of the night, the Africa Player Of the Year was won by Yaya Toure, Ivorian international and Manchester City Football Club of England player, who is winning for the third consecutive time. He beat Nigeria’s John Mikel Obi (1st runner up) and Cote D’ voire’s Didier Drogba to clinch the highly sought after award.

A lot of fans were disappointed that their hero, Mikel, didn’t win the coveted prize, but according to top notch comedian, Gbenga Adeyinka, who commented via Twitter, “I’m sure this would make Mikel to work harder to win next year. Age is still on his side.”

Some fans also had issues with the fact that no female was nominated in any of the categories. According to a lady, Agrom who tweets via @agromella, “Africa just showed how they treat their women #gender inequality. Apparently, there are no female footballers in Africa.”

As for the performances, it was indeed a very pleasant and entertaining experience for guests to have a wonderful time. Afro-Calypso exponent, Lagbaja who was dressed in a neon lighted 3D costume wowed guests with his high-tech and futuristic performance, as robot-like, bata drums-wielding giants appeared on the stage together with him.

Flavour’s performance was electric to say the least. He practically set the stage ablaze together with his energetic dancers. He basked in the moment as he moved his waist in synch with the rhythm of one of his fast tempo songs before slow-diving into “Ada Ada,” the soft melodious song that tells a love story of a pretty African damsel.

Other performers include D’banj, Lira, and Sherifa from Ghana.

The event was attended by distinguished personalities like Issa Hayatou, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dame Abimbola Fashola, wife of Lagos State governor; Mrs. Gladys Talabi, Globacom’s Executive Director, legal services, amongst many others.

P-Square wrapped up the show with a beautiful performance, as they sang accompanied by a live band, combined with their dance routine

Martin Bashir resigns from MSNBC job over Sarah Palin ‘defecation’ comments

The British journalist Martin Bashir has resigned from his job as an MSNBC talk show host after he made comments suggesting someone should defecate in Sarah Palin’s mouth.

The British-born journalist said he regretted the 'deeply offensive' suggestion made after the Republican compared US debts to slavery

The broadcaster, who first made his name in the late 1990s with an exclusive interview with Princess Diana, took issue with a speech in which the former vice-Presidential candidate compared US debt to China with slavery.

Mr Bashir called Ms Palin a “world class idiot” for making the comparison, and said she would “qualify” for the sort of punishment some slaves were subjected to – having others urinate and defecate in their mouths.
In a statement released yesterday, Mr Bashir wrote: “I deeply regret what was said.

“It is my sincere hope that all of my colleagues, at this special network, will be allowed to focus on the issues that matter without the distraction of myself or my ill-judged comments.”
His resignation, effective immediately, was accepted by MSNBC president Phil Griffin, who in a statement thanked him “for three great years” with the network.

Mr Bashir had previously issued an apology to the former Alaska governor and to his viewers, calling his remarks “wholly unacceptable” and “deeply offensive”.

Ms Palin nonetheless pushed for further action from the network, and cancelled an appearance on NBC’s Today show with Matt Lauer. Her organisation SarahPAC said she wanted “to know what disciplinary measures (MSNBC) are taking about Martin Bashir’s appalling statement”.
Mr Bashir had criticized Palin and what he called her “long-diseased mind”. He told the story of Thomas Thistlewood, a former overseer at a plantation who described in diaries how he dealt with wayward slaves by, in one case, having another slave defecate in the mouth of the miscreant. In another case, someone urinated in the face of a slave being punished.

“When Ms Palin invokes slavery,” Mr Bashir said, “she doesn't just prove her rank ignorance, she confirms (that) if anyone truly qualifies for a dose of discipline from Thomas Thistlewood, then she would be the outstanding candidate.”

Mr Bashir’s slots on MSNBC have been covered by contributor Joy-Ann Reid in recent days, and the network said a permanent replacement will be named in the coming weeks.

Bashir came to MSNBC in 2010 from ABC News' Nightline. He had joined ABC in 2004 as a correspondent for the 20/20 programme.

Prior to that, the London-born journalist won attention for documentaries including “Living With Michael Jackson,” which in 2003 aired on ABC to a huge audience, and his interview with Princess Diana in 1995.

Bashir's exit from MSNBC coincided with the network parting company with actor Alec Baldwin, who was suspended from his weekly talk show after just two weeks for using an anti-gay slur in a New York City street encounter.
