BHP reports rebound in iron ore output

BHP Group, the world’s biggest miner, reported a rebound in iron ore output in the fourth quarter after a cyclone hit production in March, and forecast modest output growth in 2019/2020 amid a surge in prices.

BHP met its revised target for iron ore production, but flagged $1bn (R14bn) in productivity losses for fiscal 2019 in its quarterly production report, flowing from disruptions to operations across its commodities.

Singapore Airshow sees plane deals shrink to $12.7bn

The biannual Singapore Airshow, Asia's biggest aerospace and defence exhibition, saw trade deals fall to $12.7bn (£8.9bn) this year compared with public takings of $32bn in 2014.

 

Organisers said the smaller amount was because more transactions are being made privately due to the "changing nature of business deals".

There were 11 announced deals, with another 40 made at undisclosed values.

The airshow launched on Wednesday and opens to the public this weekend.

ChemChina offers to buy Syngenta for $43bn

The deal would be the biggest foreign purchase by a Chinese company and the second biggest takeover in the chemicals industry over the past year.

 

ChemChina plans to pay 480 Swiss francs in cash for each share in Syngenta.

The Swiss company said it was 'unanimously recommending the offer to shareholders' and that the deal will help it further expand in China.

Women’s Jobs at risk in Fourth Industrial Revolution

The Fourth Industrial Revolution will have a disproportionately negative impact on the economic prospects of women, although the emphasis on talent brought about by sweeping changes caused by disruptions to the labour force will result in more women progressing into senior positions, a new study by the World Economic Forum has found.

According to The Industry Gender Gap Report, published yesterday in Davos, the burden of job losses that will result from automation and disinter-mediation as a result of the Fourth Industrial Revolution will impact on women and men relatively equally, with 52 per cent of the 5.1 million net job losses expected globally between now and 2020 affecting men, compared with 48 per cent affecting women. However, the fact that those women make up a smaller share of the workforce means  that today’s economic gender gap may widen even further than the current 40 per cent.

 

This blow to gender equality can be explained by the fact that some of the roles most at risk from automation and disintermediation are those that are performed by a larger proportion of women; for example, in the Office and Administrative” job family. However, it is also partly a result of the fact that women are relatively under-represented when it comes to jobs that are expected to have the most growth in the next five years; for example, the Computer and Mathematical and Architecture and Engineering job families.

SABMiller beats expectations for sales and revenue

LONDON — SABMiller, the brewer being bought by Anheuser-Busch InBev in the industry’s biggest acquisition, reported a gain in third-quarter sales on strong demand in Latin America and Africa.

So-called organic lager volume advanced 3% in the three months through December, the London-based maker of Pilsner Urquell and Castle lagers said on Thursday.
