Ghana Inflation rate up 17.7% in December 2015

The rate of inflation rose to 17.7 per cent in December to end 2015 up from the 17.6 per cent recorded in November, the Government Statistician Dr Philomena Nyarko, has said.

 

The monthly change rate in December 2015 was 1.1 per cent compared with 1.0 per cent in November.

The year-on-year non-food inflation rate for December 2015 was 23.3 per cent, while that for the food inflation rate was 8.0 per cent.

Private Investors needed in the Agriculture Sector – Minister

Nii Djanmah Vanderpuye, the Greater Accra Deputy Regional Minister, has called on private investors to partner government to help develop the agriculture value chain.

 

He said this would make Ghanaian farmers more profitable and also give them the opportunity to expand in the export market.

Nii Djanmah said this in a keynote address when the Accra Metropolitan Assemby (AMA) in collaboration with the Metro Department of the Food and Agriculture celebrated the 31st Farmers and Fishermen’s Day at the Karikari Park at Dansoman on Friday.

Ghana drops in World Bank ease of doing business ranking

Ghana’s ranking in ease of doing business has reduced slightly from 112th to 114th in the Doing Business Report, a flagship report of the World Bank which assesses business regulations and the ease of doing business in countries.

The report noted that there is a strong association between performance in the ease of doing business ranking and performance in other measures of economic competitiveness and quality of government and governance.

“Economies that rank well on the ease of doing business also score well on such measures as the Global Competitiveness Index and Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index.”

Ghana’s new rank in the previous year’s report – Doing Business 2015 – was 112th after the World Bank revised the rankings in accordance with a change in the methodology of the annual report.

Ghanaian Debts of Government Institutions affect operations of Water Company

The piled up debts of Government institutions across the country of water bills is affecting the operations of the Ghana Water Company Limited. 

The Acting  Regional Chief  Manager, Ms Janet Atebiya, disclosed this to the GNA during the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Company in Bolgatanga,  in the Upper East Region, on the theme, “Portable Water Provision in Ghana: Prospects for the Future”.

Ms Atebiya explained that the Company spends huge sums of money importing water treatment items to be able to treat water for the general public and the state institutions.

She also mentioned the failure of customers to settle their bills promptly, coupled with the illegal connection by some recalcitrant people as some of the factors hampering the smooth

Ghana: Teacher absenteeism in drops to 9% – Council

Teacher absenteeism has dropped to nine per cent, the National Teaching Council, has announced.

 

 

Dr Augustine Tawiah, Executive-Director of the Council, said this is a significant improvement in a country which had over the years recorded 27 per cent teacher absenteeism.

CEPIL warned fight against Corruption, clampdown requires independent prosecution mechanism –

The Centre for Public Interest Law (CEPIL) has warned that the fight against widespread corruption would remain a mirage if efforts are not made to establish an independent prosecution mechanism to combat the canker.

“There is an urgent need for independent prosecution mechanism in Ghana, indeed with the absence of an independent anti-corruption enforcement mechanism, Ghana will not succeed in its fight against corruption,” CEPIL Executive Director, Mr Augustine Niber said.

Mr Niber gave the warning at a news briefing to share with journalists the Centre’s latest findings in two research reports on the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the Public Accounts Committee of parliament.

World Bank Supports Ghanaian Economy With $500m

The credit from the International Development Association (IDA) supports the First Macroeconomic Stability for Competitiveness and Growth Development Policy Financing (DPF).
The first of three development policy financing operations is aimed at helping the Government of Ghana stabilize its economy and shore up fiscal control by implementing financial policies and processes that are transparent and predictable.
